5 Best Clean Acne-Safe Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin

Five clean moisturizers for acne-prone, sensitive skin from Clearstem, Sofie Pavitt Face, Three Ships, Vanicream, and Biba de Sousa

Finding a clean moisturizer for acne-prone skin can involve a LOT of trial and error. You want enough hydration to keep your skin comfortable, a texture you enjoy using, and a formula that agrees with your skin.

I have acne-prone, highly sensitive skin and rosacea, so I’m especially picky about moisturizers. How a product feels, how it fits into my routine, and how my skin responds all matter to me.

In this guide, I’m sharing my picks for the best clean, acne-safe moisturizers, including options for oily skin, dry skin, lightweight hydration, and a smaller budget. Clearstem HYDRAGLOW takes my best overall spot, with Sofie Pavitt Face, Three Ships, Vanicream, and Biba de Sousa rounding out the list.

Below, I’ll explain what makes each moisturizer different and who I’d recommend it for.

Clearstem HYDRAGLOW

best acne safe moisturizer overall

This is my favorite skincare product from CLEARSTEM, hands down! I use it morning and night, all year round.

It has a jelly cream texture that applies and absorbs easily. Its star ingredients are Bakuchiol, Plant Stem Cells, Squalane, all which hydrate, regenerate and restore the skin. It took me over 6 years to find the perfect acne safe moisturizer, until I finally gave HYDRAGLOW a go!

Note that it has a noticeable blueberry scent, so if you’re super duper sensitive to natural essential oils which are present in this formula, make sure to do some patch testing. I have extremely sensitive skin and rosacea, but HYDRAGLOW doesn’t bother me.

I reviewed every single product from Clearstem, you can read my complete Clearstem review blog post here!

Sofie Pavitt Face Skin Jelly

best gel moisturizer for acne

If your skin tends to be on the oilier side, the Sofie Pavitt Skin Jelly Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer is the PERFECT moisturizer for you.

The formula includes beta-glucan, allantoin, and sodium, zinc, and copper PCA, which all work to calm and soothe the skin any active acne breakouts, too.‍ ‍This acne-safe gel moisturizer actively helps control oil while still hydrating the skin.

It has a satin finish, your skin will never feel oily or greasy with this one. This is my favorite moisturizer to use in humid, warmer months, it keeps my skin so clear, calm and comfortable. Fragrance Free.

Three Ships Restore

best moisturizer for dry skin with acne

The Three Ships Restore Ceramides + Gotu Kola Barrier Repair cream is the most barrier friendly, hydrating acne safe moisturizer from this bunch. Perfect if you struggle with dry or dehydrated skin that needs gentle nourishment and barrier support.

I love that even though this is a richer moisturizer, it never feels thick or heavy. Three Ships states “This fast-absorbing cream replenishes moisture and reduces redness, clinically proven hypoallergenic and safe for even the most sensitive skin”, and I completely agree. I personally reach for this acne safe cream in the dry, colder months. The ingredients are squeaky clean and Switch Natural App approved. Fragrance Free.

Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer

best budget-friendly moisturizer for acne

The Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer is not only my most affordable pick on this list, but it’s also the best moisturizer for extremely sensitive skin. It’s a lightweight lotion that moisturizes beautifully without clogging pores or causing sensitivity.

Vanicream formulated it with hyaluronic acid and 5 key ceramides, and it has a very minimal ingredient list. Dermatologists widely recommend this facial moisturizer as it’s non-comedogenic, safe for the most sensitive/post-procedure skin, and has the National Eczema Association seal of approval. If you have more oily skin, this moisturizer may be too much for you however.

Vanicream is also the most widely available and accessible moisturizer ever, you can find it at pretty much any drugstore. The ingredients are squeaky clean and Switch Natural App approved. Fragrance Free.

Biba de Sousa The Daily Moisturizer

best light cream moisturizer for acne

Formulated by celebrity esthetician Biba De Sousa (works with Hailey Bieber, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus etc.), The Daily Moisturizer is what you want if you’re looking for a lightweight acne safe moisturizer with ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

This lightweight moisturizer is perfect for combo and oily skin, as it offers essential moisture without feeling heavy. It leaves a demi matte finish and hydrates the skin all day. Note that this moisturizer has a citrus scent due to the essential oils in it, so if you can’t tolerate essential oils, you may want to patch test this first.

FAQ

  • Which moisturizer should I choose for oily versus dry acne-prone skin? The Sofie Pavitt Skin Jelly for oily skin, and the Three Ships Restore or Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer for dry skin.

  • Which of these moisturizers are fragrance-free? Sofie Pavitt Skin Jelly, Three Ships Restore and Vanicream.

  • How do Skin Jelly and Biba’s Daily Moisturizer compare? The biggest differences are that Skin Jelly is a gel and fragrance free, and Biba’s Daily Moisturizer is a cream and has a citrus scent as well as vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in it. Also, Skin Jelly is more lightweight.

  • Can a non-comedogenic moisturizer still disagree with my skin? Honestly, yes. We are all bio-individual, and sometimes even products without pore clogging ingredients could cause a reaction in form of a breakout, rash or redness. This is why I always recommend patch testing a new skincare product.
